 | 11:00 am - The Great Slumber

From the listing:
The Great Slumber
The pillows are inspired by those suspenseful moments when a sleeping loved one is a little too still for a little too long. Using an irreverent combination of comfort & fear the pillows parallel sleep & death. Project goal: taking ownership of morbidly intrusive thoughts through humor & play.
I much prefer The Little Death, myself.
Bow chicka wah wah!
Thanks Rebecca!

 | 03:43 pm - Book 48. Twilight, Stephenie Meyer All right. Many people who are much wittier than I am have effectively savaged Meyer's writing. It *is* a tempting target. First book that I have read in a while whose prose made me chortle-- and not because it was (intentionally) funny, either. The writing is bad. Pretty bad, in fact. But people are not reading and loving this book for the literature value, so I'm not sure how relevant Meyer's prose skills are to the experience.
Anyhow, I won't discuss that further.
I want to talk for a moment about what makes this book compelling. And at least for me, it had its moments. Even as the clunky and repetitive adjective use made me want to toss the book out the window, I kept reading it. I have to confess, actually-- I could not stop reading it. Why? What's the attraction?
Honestly, what I think Meyers does absolutely brilliantly is capture the wish fulfillment dream of your average teenage girl. I had one. Mine was that for some reason David Bowie or Adam Ant found themselves in my unbelievably small and boring town visiting a relative or something. In my fantasy, I would run into him on the street. "Hello", he would say in his British accent. "What is there to do in this town?"/"This town?" I would say smoothly, not missing a beat. "Nothing." And my smile would be so infectious that he would smile back, and instantly recognize that he and I belonged together. All my faults would be charming to him. All my quirks would turn out to have been designed to win his love. Then I would show all the stupid and small minded people from my small town. That was, with occasional variation, how the fantasy went.
And that is what Twilight is all about. When confronted with the dangerous and out-of-bounds love of her life, everything that Bella does badly is suddenly an asset. It turns out that she was intended for something different. Something special. Who doesn't want to be intended to be something special?
This is not to say that Bella is somehow a good role model. She isn't. But role models are things that grown-ups focus on-- not teenage girls. And, apparently, also not grown women who still have a teenage girl hiding in the corner.
So. No interest in reading the next book. If I see it used, I might pick it up. I can't in good conscience really recommend it. Twilight made my brain hurt.
Still, I get it. And I can't blame the kids who eat it up. I can blame Meyers, just a little bit; she had a chance to make Bella much more interesting, but decided not to do it. And from what I have heard, this does not improve in the later books.
p.s. Don't be reading this for further exploration of the vampire legend. These vampires are moody boys who sparkle. Romance Vampires. Not even worth mocking. Blame Anne Rice and the Buffyverse.

…a few decades ago. I don’t remember having this photo taken, though I do remember it was at the impetus of of our step-mother, Betty. I think it is the only studio photograph of me, and certainly the only professional one of my sister and I. Until I scanned the photo, I didn’t realize how scuffed the plastic covering had become. I am afraid I would damage it if I tried to remove the covering, which is held on with rivets.

 | 09:40 am - Pet Shop Boys-- June 2009 Amsterdam A few shots from the show.

B. and I were really too tired for this. Too close to the wedding and the move. The boys were in good form-- put on a good show. My problem was that my favorite period in their career is the least popular in terms of most of their fans. So I was a weird mirror to the rest of the fans-- singing along to the songs where everyone else was bored.
Two things: It was entertaining to see Neil dressed like Sinatra-- they have started to look alike. Second, they did do a good version of "Love, etc.", my favorite from the new album:

 | 11:50 pm - Book about girl in France coming to Canada to marry? It's a book about a girl who comes to Canada from France to marry a guy, in the 1700's or something (back when they needed women in Canada. they would get a trunk of supplies and I think they were called 'daughters of france'). (I think she actually decided to take another girl's place.) She tells the girls a story about her when she was little and a guy on a white horse rescues her (and she throws something in his eyes and they sting?) and they all think it's really romantic. She meets the guy she's going to marry and she looks just like his dead wife. he calls her his wife's name (amy?) when he think she is drowning. At the end he thinks her and his kids were scalped by natives because she hangs her hair in a tree so the natives would think they were already killed. She hides with the kids in a root cellar. Earlier in the book she pretends to be a man so she can claim some land or something, and she also meets the guy who rescued her when she was little. I'm pretty sure it was a Canadian book. It's at least 5 years old. The cover was blue with a drawing of a girl? I think? I've been thinking and thinking but i can't remember the name :( Any help would be appreciated :)
